How to Make Beard Oil: A Simple Unscented Starter Blend

by East Moon Editorial Team on Oct 30, 2026

Quick answer: To make beard oil at home, measure cosmetic oils intended for leave-on skin use into a clean, completely dry bottle and mix gently. A simple starter example is 5 mL jojoba oil plus 5 mL argan oil, with no added fragrance, essential oils or water. Label the ingredients and mixing date. This is a small personal-use blend, not a tested commercial formula or a beard-growth treatment.

Start with ingredients you already tolerate and their supplier directions. “Natural” does not mean suitable for everyone, and an unscented homemade blend is not automatically allergy-free. If you react to either ingredient, do not make this combination.

What goes into a simple beard oil?

A basic water-free beard oil uses carrier oils to coat and condition existing hair. Jojoba and argan are examples of cosmetic ingredients used for this purpose. You do not need a long ingredient list to try a simple blend, and adding more oils makes it harder to identify the cause if your skin reacts.

Choose clearly labeled ingredients from a supplier that provides intended use, storage directions and a use-by date. Use the complete ingredient declaration, not only the name on the front. A product sold as “argan hair serum” may be a finished formula containing other ingredients, rather than plain argan oil.

This guide does not reproduce an EAST MOON formula. A ready-made beard oil can contain multiple ingredients with different formulation needs. Do not assume a commercial product with jojoba in its name is a single carrier oil to pour into a homemade recipe.

A 10 mL beard oil DIY recipe

Ingredient Amount by volume Share of the blend
Jojoba oil suitable for leave-on cosmetic use 5 mL 50%
Argan oil suitable for leave-on cosmetic use 5 mL 50%
Added fragrance, essential oils and water None 0%
Total 10 mL 100%

The equal split is an easy measuring example, not a tested ideal ratio. Use a clean graduated measuring tool that can read milliliters accurately. Drop sizes vary, so counting drops is not an accurate way to reproduce a 50/50 recipe. Do not swap a volume measurement for the same number of grams without adjusting the formula.

You also need a clean, fully dry bottle with a suitable closure, a clean dry funnel if necessary, and a label. Choose a bottle with enough room to mix the 10 mL batch without filling it to the rim. Follow the container supplier's cleaning directions and let every part dry completely.

How to make beard oil at home step by step

1. Check each ingredient and the workspace

Wash and dry your hands and clean the work surface. Check ingredient names, condition, supplier instructions and dates. Skip expired ingredients, oils with an unusual smell, or products whose intended use is unclear. Keep the mixing area away from splashing water, food preparation and household cleaners.

2. Measure the two oils separately

Measure 5 mL of jojoba oil and 5 mL of argan oil using suitable clean, dry measuring equipment. Keep track of what goes into the bottle. If you make a measuring mistake, do not try to correct it by guessing several more drops.

A single oil you tolerate can also be a simpler personal-care choice when its label permits that use. Mixing is optional; a blend is not automatically better than one ingredient.

3. Combine gently and close the bottle

Transfer the measured oils, secure the closure and gently roll or invert the bottle to combine. Heating is not needed for this example. Keep the dropper tip or dispenser from touching your fingers, face or the wet sink.

If you are wondering how to create beard oil with a lighter or richer feel, first judge this small batch at a low application amount. Change only one variable in a future small batch and record it. Do not turn an oily finish into an excuse to add water or wash-off products to the bottle.

4. Label the blend before using it

Write “jojoba oil 5 mL + argan oil 5 mL,” the mixing date and the ingredient suppliers or batch details on a label or note. Keep the original packaging information so you can check storage advice and ingredient dates later.

Do not label the mixture “preservative-free and safe for a year.” No stability or microbial testing has established a shelf life for this home blend. Supplier dates describe the original ingredients, not a tested expiry date for your mixed bottle.

5. Try a small area before wider use

Follow each ingredient supplier's small-area testing guidance before applying the blend widely. If no guidance is supplied, ask the supplier or a dermatologist, particularly if you have sensitive skin, eczema or a history of cosmetic reactions. A small-area trial cannot rule out all future irritation or allergy.

Do not apply to broken or irritated skin, and keep oil away from the eyes and lips. Stop using it and wash it off if irritation develops. Avoid an ingredient you know you are allergic to rather than trying to make it acceptable by dilution.

6. Begin with a very small application

Spread a small amount between your palms and work it through clean, dry facial hair. Add more only if the hair needs it. Too much oil can leave a greasy finish and does not improve the recipe. See the beard oil application guide for distribution and amount adjustments.

Ingredients to leave out of this starter blend

Essential oils and fragrance: They are not necessary for conditioning. Their suitability depends on the specific ingredient, concentration and use area. This guide does not supply a universal “safe number of drops.” Keep the starter blend free of added scent rather than improvising a dilution.

Water, fresh aloe, tea and other wet additions: These change the formulation and preservation requirements. Do not add them to this water-free example. A finished product containing aloe or glycerin is not evidence that either can simply be stirred into oil at home.

Fresh herbs, food scraps and kitchen infusions: They add uncertainty about contamination and stability. Use properly labeled cosmetic ingredients instead of treating the bottle as a food recipe.

Vitamin E as a preservative substitute: Vitamin E is an antioxidant used in some oil formulas. It does not replace a suitable antimicrobial preservation system or make a contaminated mixture safe.

Storage and when to discard it

Keep the bottle tightly closed, away from sunlight and heat, and follow the ingredients' storage requirements. Store it outside the wet shower area. Avoid topping up an old bottle with new oil, because that makes its age and condition harder to track.

Make a small amount you expect to use promptly. Do not use the blend beyond the earliest ingredient use-by date, and remember it may need discarding sooner. Discard it if water enters, the container becomes contaminated, or smell, color or texture changes unexpectedly. An unchanged appearance does not prove safety or establish a shelf life.

Homemade or ready-made: choose the work you want to do

Choose a small DIY blend if… Choose a ready-made product if…
You want to measure a simple personal-use combination You prefer a labeled product with its own directions
You can keep equipment dry and track ingredient details You do not want to buy measuring tools and separate ingredients
You accept that this recipe has no tested shelf-life claim You want to compare pack size, dispenser and stated formula details

The EAST MOON Jojoba Beard Oil pump is a ready-made 30 mL leave-in option. Its listed ingredients include jojoba, sunflower and almond oils; it is not pure jojoba or the two-ingredient recipe above. Check the full label, including other listed oils, if you have fragrance or ingredient sensitivities.

Frequently asked questions

Can homemade beard oil make a beard grow faster?

This starter blend is for conditioning existing hair. It has not been tested as a growth treatment and does not establish faster growth or new follicles. Do not add growth claims to a recipe just because an ingredient is popular.

Do I have to add essential oils?

No. The example uses only two carrier oils and no added fragrance. Essential oils introduce ingredient-specific suitability and concentration questions that are unnecessary for this starter blend.

How long does homemade beard oil last?

There is no verified shelf life for this untested blend. Ingredient freshness, handling and storage all matter. Keep the batch small, follow supplier instructions, never exceed the earliest ingredient use-by date, and discard sooner if contamination or changes occur.

Can I use an EAST MOON beard oil as the carrier oil?

Treat an EAST MOON beard oil as a finished leave-in product and use it as labeled. A product that lists jojoba or argan can contain other ingredients. It is not interchangeable with a clearly labeled single cosmetic oil for this recipe.

Keep the conditioning routine simple

Start small, keep a record and judge how your existing beard feels. If you prefer to skip the mixing step, compare ready-made beard oils. For product-format differences, read beard oil vs balm, or browse all grooming guides.
